How does vehicle shipping work with McKonnen Auto Carriers?
You give us the pickup and delivery locations along with your vehicle's details, and we match your shipment with a vetted carrier from our network. The carrier picks up your vehicle, transports it, and delivers it to the address you specify. We handle the coordination and paperwork from booking through delivery.
What happens after I book my shipment?
Once you book, we match your shipment with a carrier from our vetted network and send you their contact information along with an estimated pickup window. The driver calls to confirm pickup, inspects your vehicle, and notes its condition on the bill of lading before loading it. At delivery, you or your representative inspect the vehicle together with the driver, sign off, and pay any remaining balance directly to the carrier.
How long does vehicle transport take?
Most shipments take a few days to two weeks depending on distance and route. Longer or less common routes can take more time. We'll give you an estimated pickup and delivery window when you book.

Vehicle prep
What's the difference between open and enclosed transport?
Open transport moves your vehicle on a multi-car trailer exposed to the weather and road debris, it's the most common and affordable option. Enclosed transport moves it inside a covered trailer, protected from the elements, typically used for classic, exotic, or higher-value vehicles. Most shipments run on open carriers, so we can't guarantee the vehicle arrives spotless, road dust and grime are normal. If that matters to you, enclosed transport is the better choice.
Can you ship a vehicle that doesn't run?
Yes. Let us know when you book, that's what the operable question on the quote form is for. Inoperable vehicles need a winch to load and unload, which takes more time and specialized equipment, so it typically costs a bit more than a running vehicle.
What do I need to have ready at pickup?
Bring a valid photo ID for whoever releases or receives the vehicle. A working key needs to go with the car so the driver can load and move it, keep a spare with you if you have one. Disable toll transponders like E-ZPass or SunPass, we're not responsible for tolls charged while your vehicle is in transit. Check underneath the vehicle for any fluid leaks beforehand, and let us know about any unusual starting, stopping, or alarm procedures your vehicle needs. The driver will walk the vehicle with you and note its condition before loading.
Can I pack personal items in my vehicle during transport?
Most carriers allow a small amount, generally up to 100 pounds, packed in the trunk or cargo area only, never the back seat or passenger seat. Carriers are licensed to haul vehicles, not household goods, so anything beyond that adds weight the truck isn't budgeted for and can put it over federal weight limits at a scale station. Anything you do pack travels at your own risk, cargo insurance covers the vehicle, not what's inside it. Skip valuables, electronics, and anything fragile, and check with us before you pack anything at all, since the final call belongs to the driver at pickup.
How much gas should be in the vehicle for pickup?
About a quarter tank is standard. That's enough for the driver to load and unload the vehicle without adding unnecessary weight. Gas is heavy, and a full tank on every vehicle adds up fast across a truck hauling nine or ten cars at once, weight that can push the load over federal limits.
